In this article, we cover how to manage photos.
Topics covered here:
Editorial workflow
Photos are published or unpublished in all languages, but editors can select visibility per language. E.g., a published photo can be visible in the front-end in English but not in French.
Find more details in Translations with language-independent workflow.
Upload photos
Editors can upload new documents from the document overview page in two ways:
- Select Upload in the top-right corner:
- Drag and drop the document file into the documents area:
Once uploaded, select the document you want to edit.
Image metadata mapping to photo fields
In Administration -> Configurations -> Photo, administrators can map the image metadata to photo fields. E.g., in the screenshot below,
- The image's Title maps to the photo's title.
- The image's ColorSpace maps to the custom field colorspace.
When uploading an image for the first time, FORGE creates the photo entity and values its fields accordingly to the configured mapping.
Edit Photos
The photo editor page provides editors with dedicated sessions to manage:
Translations
Visibility per language
By default, photos are visible in all languages. In the translation section, edit the photo visibility language by language.
Photo per language
Select a language to overwrite the neutral version of the photo properties per language. E.g., in the screenshot below, for the Italian language, the alpha-plater-it slug overwrites the neutral alpha-player:
Preview
In the preview section, editors can preview, replace the image, adjust the focus, and see the image full-screen.
Replace the image
Select Replace image to change the photo's image:
...
Note: When you replace the image in a photo,
- The photo either goes to Reviewed or it is automatically published based on the toggle Auto publish after replace in Administration -> Configurations -> Photo:
- The mapping described in Image metadata mapping to photo fields isn't applied. So, all photo fields remain valued as they are.
Adjust the focus
Select Adjust focus to enter into the Adjust focus page:
Then, define the image area that any format must display:
Eventually, select Apply in the bottom-right corner to update formats:
Select Reset focus to default to delete changes. Otherwise, exit from the Adjust focus page by selecting the cross in the top-right corner.
Back to the photo editor page, a blue badge near Adjust focus highlights that the default focus was changed:
Full screen
Select Full screen to display the image in full resolution in a new browser tab:
Main properties
Photo built-in main properties are:
- Entity code: Read-only unique entity identifier.
- Slug: Human-readable entity identifier. If the photo isn't published, editors can edit it.
- Content date: By default, it's the publishing date. Editors can edit it.
- Storage path: Read-only relative path of the image file location and name in FORGE.
- Original filename: Read-only name of the uploaded image.
History
Like for any entity, this section lists for each change who, what, and when.
General settings
Editors can select:
- Authorization group: Select the authorization group that editors must have to edit the photo.
- List availability: Select whether the photo must be included into lists that the front-end queries. See List Availability for more information.
Context and tags
Editors can select:
- Context: Text that appears above an article on the front-end. It's a small, but important piece of text which highlights the key features of the content.
- Tags: Photo's taxonomy.
Promotion
Editors can promote the photo's visibility by leveraging:
- Feature the content: Flag that makes a photo featured. This flag informs the front-end that the photo's visibility has a higher priority than not-featured ones.
- Add to selections: Add the photo to one or many editorial selections.
Relations
Editors can relate the photo to other entities regardless of their type.
